Fiatal Kutatók és Doktoranduszok X. Nemzetközi Teológuskonferenciája, Eger, 2020.

Az Apostoli Szentszék 1974. február 5-én hozta nyilvánosságra a Mindszenty József esztergomi érsek felmentéséről hozott pápai határozatot. Ezzel egy időben kinevezte Lékai László, addigi veszprémi apostoli kormányzót, Girus Tarasii-i címzetes püspököt ad nutum Sanctae esztergomi apostoli kormányzónak.

„Ego debuissem mori in Hungaria”

The antecedents, circumstances and effects of the deposition of Cardinal József Mindszenty in 1974

The Holy See has issued the papal bull deposing Cardinal József Mindszenty, Archbishop-Prince of Esztergom on the 5th February 1974. At the same time László Lékai, till then apostolic administrator of Veszprém and titular bishop of Girus Tarasii was appointed apostolic administrator of Esztergom ad nutum Sanctae. This decision was a shock to many people: not only to Hungarian Catholics living in exile but also to people of other religions and to most non-religious Hungarians as well.

In my presentation I look at the antecedents and circumstances of the deposition and at the truthfulness of the assumption shared by some implying this being the result of the conflict of Mindszenty and Pope Paul VI. Also I would like to shed light on whether this conflict had existed at all. Furthermore I intend to survey the ensuing situation and the Hungarian and international reactions to the deposition.

I am to separately examine how this decision affected Hungarians living abroad as according to experiences the step had determined the approach of Hungarian emigrant groups towards official ecclesiastical bodies for a long time.

I must note that this subject is to date still a sensitive, hotly debated topic of the Hungarian church history. Throughout my research I talked to many people among whom some share the view up till now that the deposition was a failure, what is more, a sin against the Hungarian church and against Mindszenty. Then again others highlight the consolidation, settlement of the Hungarian situation as being the result of the decision. There is no evident answer to the question which standpoint is correct, however, applying different approaches I will strive to come near to the truth.
